It may still be a few months, but this did not
prevent the churning rumor speculation about the next generation of
Apple's iPhone, grounded as iPhone 7 - also tipped by some to reach
that iPhone 6S
Here, we round all we know about the alleged
availability of the iPhone 7, including price and release date. Keep
this page bookmarked, as we will update with each new detail,
functionality and the rumor that comes our way.
Rumours and specifications
Speculation suggests, as does the typical two-year
cycle of Apple, the iPhone 7 - or iPhone 6S - will not be much
different from its predecessors iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Apple should retain LCD LTPS-based panel to the
handset display, despite venturing into OLED displays for AppleWatch. This movement led to some to speculate that Apple would indeed
also use the OLED technology for its next smartphone, but this now
seems unlikely.
According to a note investor JP Morgan analyst Narci
Chang, Japan Display installation could have the capacity to churn
out nearly 100 million 5in LTPS LCD panels each year, thanks to a $
1.4 billion cash to Apple, suggesting that the company will stick
with traditional LCD screens for the next iPhone.
While the screen technology will change unlikely,
rumors suggest that Apple could opt for a scratch-resistant sapphire
display in the next generation of the iPhone, such as that found on
the Apple Watch. Production problems have prevented the iPhone 6
launch with a sapphire screen but speculation claims that Apple has
teamed up with Foxconn for the difficult displays ready in time.
In terms of screen size, there is talk that Apple
will release multiple variations of next year, an iPhone with a 4.7in
screen and one with a 5.5 inches screen. Some rumors claim that Apple
will also release a 4-inch smaller model for customers with delicate
hands.
Separately by Patently Apple rumors claim that the
company could follow in the footsteps of the Galaxy S6 edge by adding
a curved screen.
The Wall Street Journal (paywalled) reports that the
display on the iPhone 7, bent or not, will feature the same
touchscreen technology work first introduced 12in Apple MacBook,
allowing a touch surface to record degrees of pressure and as motion.
According to the report, it would make room for new applications such
as "a pianistic application that make different sounds when the
button lightly or more heavily."
This rumor has been incorporated in new rumors on
9to5Mac, which claims that built-in support touch Force will bedisplayed iOS 9 off at WWDC next month.
The smartphone is expected to present the same
sculpted aluminum body that the iPhone 6, and may be available in the
same white, gray and gold color space options. There is talk that the
iPhone also 7 will be available in pink, but we would like to take
this with a pinch of salt.
The iPhone 7, we assume, will run the next version of
Apple iOS, iOS 9. It is expected to debut at the Apple WWDCconference in June, but will not that exciting, according to a report
on 9to5Mac, as it will focus on bug fixes and stability improvements
rather than new features.
Despite this, there is talk that iOS will propose a
revised 9 card service and a split screen mode for iPad users. We can
also assume that will include Apple Watch application that debuted
alongside iOS 8.2, allowing users to pair and sync the notebook with
the smartphone.
iOS 9 also comes with support for voice over 4G
(VoLTE), with three confirmed that it will offer this service on the
next generation iPhone.
Under the hood, the iPhone should include a 7 A9 chip
manufactured by TSMC. Previous speculation had suggested Apple would
seek to Samsung to provide for his bowels next-gen iPhone, but it has
since apparently dumping it due to the unexpected popularity of the
Galaxy S6.
It will be paired with 2GB of RAM, according to a
report Technews.tw, the same as inside the iPad Air.
In terms of storage, the iPhone 7 is likely to be
available in the same variations 16GB, 64GB and 128GB than its
predecessor.
It was reported by John Gruber of Daring Fireball
that the next iPhone will have "the biggest jump ever the
camera", featuring a two-lens system that seemingly brings to
the quality of the digital SLR camera. He suggested that Apple could
opt for the new Sony 21MP image sensor, the Exmoor RS.
Weight has been added to this rumor with the
acqusition of LinX Apple, a company that specializes in high-end
smartphone camera technology.
Beyond that, we do not know much about the iPhone 7
again, although some speculate it might be the first iPhone to launch
with wireless charging.
Release date
According to a leaked Vodafone service, 7 iPhone goes
on sale on September 25, with pre-defined commands to launch a wee
earlier.
However, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said
that Apple could mix things up this year with an August 7 launch
iPhone.
According to Kuo, Foxconn will handle some 60 to 70
percent of new iPhone orders 7, with a 4.7in model accounts for
two-thirds of sales, with the remaining third being for the iPhone
5.5-inch raised 7 Plus.
Price
Again unsurprisingly there are no details on the cost
of the iPhone 7 yet, but it is likely to be a price similar to the
iPhone last year 6. Available in 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB versions,
the smartphone costs £ 539, £ 619 and £ 699 respectively.
If Apple reveals more iPhone 7 Plus combined
screening, expect it to be more expensive at £ 619, £ 699 and £
789.
